Commissioner: armed aggression of the Russian Federation leads to loss of human lives and destruction of civilian homes

The escalation of the armed conflict by the Russian Federation in eastern Ukraine, where the OSCE has recorded 3,600 violations of the silence over the past two days, has resulted in casualties, both civilian and military, and significant destruction of civilian infrastructure and housing in violation of the Geneva Conventions. on the protection of civilians during the 1949 war. This was emphasized by the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Lyudmila Denisova.

According to her, by shelling objects of life and settlements, the occupying country violates the right of Ukrainian citizens to life.

Every hour, the Commissioner receives notifications of new demolition of residential buildings in settlements, mainly in the Donetsk region.

Thus, according to the Proliska Humanitarian Mission, only during the night and morning of February 19, 2022, about 40 houses were damaged in the villages of Mykolaivka, Novognativka, Starognativka, Granitne, Donetsk region, and the villages of Syze, Novozvanivka, Luhansk region. The outskirts of Stanytsia Luhanska and along the entire line of demarcation are being shelled. As of this time, this figure has doubled.

People in the settlements shelled by representatives of the occupation administrations suffer not only material damage, but also psychological trauma, which leads to negative health consequences.

The Commissioner asks the Ukrainian authorities to take all possible measures to ensure the support of the affected population, to prevent risks to human life and health, as well as to provide humanitarian and psychological assistance.

The Ombudsman called on the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to record the facts of war crimes against civilians in Ukraine, and called on the international community to strengthen sanctions against the Russian Federation in order to de-escalate the conflict, stabilize eastern Ukraine and restore peace.
