Commissioner: The enemy continues to kill Ukrainian children and destroy educational institutions

As of 10 a.m. on May 7, 2022, according to the Unified Register of Pre-Trial Investigations, as well as other sources that need confirmation, 223 children have died and 410 children have been injured (+2 per day) since the Russian Federation invaded Ukraine.

It is impossible to establish the actual number of dead and wounded children due to the fact that the occupying forces are actively fighting in Ukrainian cities.

The most affected children were in Donetsk region - 139, Kyiv region - 116, Kharkiv region - 98, Chernihiv region - 68, Kherson region - 46, Mykolaiv region - 44, Luhansk region - 37, Zaporizhia region - 27, Sumy region - 17, Kyiv city - 16, Zhytomyr region -  15.

An 11-year-old boy was wounded as a result of enemy shelling of residential buildings in the village of Chervona Polyana, Izium district, Kharkiv region.

On May 4, a convoy of private cars leaving the town of Vovchansk, Chuhuiv district, Kharkiv region, in the village of Stary Saltiv, came under fire.  As a result, a 6-month-old child in one of the cars was injured, the whereabouts of another 13-year-old girl are currently unknown.

As a result of daily bombings and shelling by the Russian armed forces of Ukrainian cities and villages, 1,635 educational institutions were damaged, 126 of which were completely destroyed.

The actions of the russian occupation forces are a direct violation of Ukraine's children's right to life and security, guaranteed by the Hague and Geneva Conventions and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

I appeal to the UN Commission for Investigation Human Rights Violations during Russia's military invasion of Ukraine to take into account these facts of Russia's violations of children's rights in Ukraine.

I call on international partners to provide weapons to fight the aggressor country of Russia!
