Commissioner: Russian aggression in Ukraine kills and injures children, destroys educational institutions

As of 10 a.m. on April 23, 2022, according to the Unified Register of Pre-Trial Investigations, as well as other sources that need confirmation, 208 children have died and 387 children have been injured (+1 per day) since the Russian Federation invaded Ukraine.

It is impossible to establish the actual number of dead and wounded children due to the fact that the occupying forces are actively fighting in Ukrainian cities.

A 5-year-old child was injured as a result of shelling by the aggressor country of civilian infrastructure facilities in the Pologi district of Zaporizhia.

Due to artillery shelling of the Russian Federation by prohibited cluster munitions on civilians and infrastructure facilities of the Central, Factory and Ship districts of the city of Mykolayiv, an 11-year-old child received shrapnel wounds to the chest.

As a result of daily bombings and shelling of the Russian Federation, 1,500 educational institutions were damaged, of which 102 were completely destroyed.

Such actions of the russian occupation forces are a direct violation of the Hague and Geneva Conventions.  The aggressor continues to defiantly violate the fundamental rights of children - the right to life and health, guaranteed to every child in the world by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

I appeal to the UN Commission for Investigation Human Rights Violations during Russia's Military Invasion of Ukraine to take into account these violations of children rights in Ukraine by Russia.

I call on international partners to close the skies over Ukraine and provide weapons to fight the aggressor country of russia!
