Commissioner: Natalia Savchenko, a citizen of Ukraine in need of urgent treatment, has been in illegal detention at the ORLO for almost five years

Natalia Savchenko, a citizen of Ukraine in need of urgent treatment, has been illegally detained in the temporarily occupied territory of Luhansk for almost five years. This was announced by the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Lyudmyla Denisova.

Natalia is a gynecologist who worked in one of the medical institutions in her native Luhansk.

According to the information received by the Commissioner from relatives, on August 27, 2017, representatives of the occupation administration took Natalia from the house where her cancer-stricken mother lived and took her away in an unknown direction. Three months after Natalia's detention, the mother died without knowing where her daughter was.

It later emerged that she was being held in the so-called MGB LNR prison. In May 2018, the woman was transferred to the Luhansk pre-trial detention center.

On November 1, 2019, the so-called "Court of Appeal of the People's Republic of Belarus" sentenced Natalia Savchenko to 12 years in prison under Article 335 of the Criminal Code of the People's Republic of Belarus ("treason"). She is being held illegally in the Selezny Women's Correctional Facility № 143.

Natalia has chronic liver problems. She has a high level of bilirubin, which may indicate a disease of the biliary tract, pancreas and requires constant medical supervision and treatment. In addition, due to arrhythmia, she must regularly take medication to stabilize it. Already in prison, Natalia experienced a complicated hypertensive crisis. She is not provided with any medical care in the correctional colony.

Relatives who left for the territory controlled by the Government of Ukraine for security reasons are not able to visit Natalia. Foods and essential medicines are passed on to friends or acquaintances, but it is unknown whether they end up in it.

"All the above actions against Natalia Savchenko are violations not only of Ukrainian law but also of international law, including the 1949 Geneva Conventions on the Rules of War, the Additional Protocols to the 1977 Geneva Conventions and the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. 1950, "said Lyudmila Denisova.

The Commissioner appealed to the ICRC leadership in Ukraine to pay an urgent visit to Natalia Savchenko and facilitate her immediate release.

The Ombudsman also asked the OSCE Co-ordinator in the Humanitarian Subgroup of the Tripartite Contact Group, Charlotte Relander, to intervene personally to raise the issue of her release.
