Commissioner: Ukrainian citizen Mikheil Saakashvili goes on indefinite hunger strike in Rustav penal colony №12

Mikheil Saakashvili, a citizen of Ukraine and chairman of the Executive Committee of the National Reform Council of Ukraine, went on an indefinite hunger strike in the Rustava penal colony №12 for violating his rights to adequate medical care. This was announced by the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Lyudmyla Denisova.

Michael complained that he had not been allowed to see a doctor for several months, as well as neurologists and neurologists from the United States and Europe who wanted to take part in his treatment.

According to the Commissioner, despite the conclusions of the council of doctors set up under the Ombudsman of Georgia Nino Lomjari and doctors of the Empathy Center, Mikheil Saakashvili was not provided with proper treatment.

The previous hunger strike, which lasted for 50 days, had a significant effect on Michael's health. After several critical states, he has not yet fully recovered and needs physical and psychological rehabilitation. Repeated starvation can have irreversible consequences for Michael's health.

"Failure to provide Michael with the necessary medical care in the Georgian penitentiary is a violation of Article 3 of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and Article 22 of the Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners," said Lyudmila Denisova.

The commissioner demands that Mikheil Saakashvili be taken to a hospital immediately, which is equipped to provide emergency resuscitation measures and meets the standards of medical care for patients, taking into account all the recommendations of the medical council.
