Commissioner: 33-year-old citizen of Ukraine Andriy Harryus, who is illegally detained in SIZO-5 of temporarily occupied Donetsk, faces the maximum penalty

33-year-old Ukrainian citizen Andriy Harryus, who is illegally detained in SIZO-5 of temporarily occupied Donetsk, faces the maximum penalty. This was announced by the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Lyudmyla Denisova.

Until 2014, Andriy lived in the urban-type settlement of Krynychna, which is a part of Makeyevka, Donetsk region. With the beginning of the temporary occupation he left for Dnipropetrovsk region: there he married and tried to find a job. But later he decided to return to his native village.

According to the Commissioner, the connection with Andriy disappeared on December 11, 2018, and the next day an "assault group" broke into his house for a search. Andriy was brought with them. He looked exhausted, barely able to speak, and had obvious beatings on his body. The pregnant wife and son were locked up on the second floor, things were turned over, and he was taken away in an unknown direction.

Five days after these events, Andriy became a father for the second time: his wife, fleeing the ORDO, began to give birth simply on the train.

Only a few weeks later, his family managed to find out that Andriy is in the S5 pre-trial detention center in Donetsk.

Representatives of the occupation administration accuse Andriy Harryus of allegedly "preparing sabotage." If convicted by so-called "courts", he could face the maximum penalty - life imprisonment or the death penalty.

Andriy has problems with the gastrointestinal tract and chronic sinusitis, which constantly causes complications in the pre-trial detention center. He is not receiving any medical care. Medicines passed on by relatives do not get to him.

"All the above actions against Andriy Garrius are violations not only of Ukrainian law but also of international law, including the 1949 Geneva Conventions on the Rules of War, the Additional Protocols to the 1977 Geneva Conventions and the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. 1950, "said Lyudmila Denisova.

The Commissioner appealed to the ICRC leadership in Ukraine to pay an urgent visit to Andriy Harryus and facilitate his immediate release.

The Ombudsman also asks the OSCE Co-ordinator in the Humanitarian Subgroup of the Tripartite Contact Group, Charlotte Relander, to intervene personally to raise the issue of his release.
