Commissioner: 31-year-old citizen of Ukraine Andriy Sydorenko, who is illegally detained in Makeyevka Correctional Colony № 32 in ORDO, needs immediate treatment

31-year-old citizen of Ukraine Andriy Sydorenko, who is illegally detained in Makeyevka Correctional Colony № 32 in the territory of the temporarily occupied Donetsk region, suffers from severe diabetes and needs immediate treatment. This was announced by the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Lyudmyla Denisova.

On January 2, 2018, when Andriy was returning from Kyiv to the temporarily occupied Donetsk, he was captured by representatives of the occupation administration. He was taken away in an unknown direction with a bag on his head. For a long time, his family had nothing to do with Andriy. It later emerged that the man was being held in the basement of Donetsk's SIZO-5.

In August 2020, Andriy Sydorenko was sentenced to 10 years in prison for "espionage".

According to the Commissioner, the man suffers from a complex form of diabetes, as a result of which he gradually loses his sight. Due to arthritis of the joints, he suffers from severe pain and atrophy of the legs. He is not receiving any medical care in the penal colony. Only medicines that Andriy manages to pass on to his family help, but they don't always get to him.

"All the above actions against Andriy Sydorenko are violations not only of Ukrainian law but also of international law, including the 1949 Geneva Conventions on the Rules of War, the Additional Protocols to the 1977 Geneva Conventions and the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. 1950, "said Lyudmila Denisova.

The Commissioner appealed to the ICRC leadership in Ukraine to pay an urgent visit to Andriy Sydorenko and facilitate his immediate release. She also asked the OSCE Coordinator in the Charlotte Relander Tripartite Contact Group and the ICRC leadership in Ukraine to assist in providing medical care.

Given the critical state of health of Andriy Sydorenko, the Ombudsman insists on his immediate release.
